To Accompany An Instrumentalized Emotion

Meet me behind the woodshed,
where shadows grow,
early in the afternoon.

We’ll listen to the crickets speak
of affairs far and near,
long ago and presently.

We’ll etch our initials
into the cornerstone
of the woodshed

while the cornfield
twenty feet away
listens to secrets spilled.

Let’s kiss and grow up
grow apart, move away.

Remember only the foggiest
of near-forgotten memories
when the sun stalls in the sky
during late-June afternoons.
